Message on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Posted on: 10 March 2020

Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

We appreciate the trust you place in the management of Masjid As-Siddiq to care for the House of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) as a place of prayer, education, and community programs/activities.

In the current environment, it’s important for all of us to be aware of the steps being taken to keep the Masjid clean and safe. That’s why we want to update you on the situation with COVID-19 (the coronavirus) and the steps we are taking to ensure your health and safety when visiting Masjid As-Siddiq.

First and foremost, we should all seek protection from the virus and put our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) as our nourisher, sustainer, and provider.  The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ دَاءً إِلاَّ أَنْزَلَ لَهُ شِفَاءً

"There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment."

Please remember to make dua’ to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) to protect us from its affliction and that Allah grants a quick and peaceful cure to those who are affected by it.  Here is a Dua for protection against being afflicted by diseases:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ وَالْجُنُونِ وَالْجُذَامِ وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الأَسْقَامِ

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-barasi, wal- jununi, wal-judhami, wa sayyi’il-asqami

O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from leprosy, madness, elephantiasis, and all major diseases.

Here at Masjid As-Siddiq, we are closely monitoring the updates from government and health officials as the situation is very fluid and changes quickly.  We are also taking steps to conduct additional cleaning and sanitizing of the commonly touched surfaces of the building (e.g. door knobs, faucets, light switches, etc.).  This is being done out of caution and to provide as clean a facility as possible for our collective safety and protection.

I also urge you to take the precautions and advice from the appropriate health officials and organizations such as the Center for Disease Control and nyc.gov.  The NYC Health Department currently has the following precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19:

  • Stay home if you are sick. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing — do not use your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Do not touch your face, eyes or nose with unwashed hands.
  • If you have family or friends who are elderly, have compromised immune systems or chronic respiratory or coronary issues, do not visit them if you feel sick. Stay home and keep your loved ones safe.
  • Consider telecommuting, biking or walking to work if possible.
  • Consider staggering working hours. For example, instead of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., change some work hours to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or disinfecting wipes.
  • Get your flu shot. Although the flu shot will not protect you from COVID-19, it will help prevent the flu which has similar symptoms to this coronavirus.

Finally, while the COVID-19 cases in the Tri-State area continue to grow, we should all pray fo those afflicted with it.  Here is a Dua for those who are afflicted:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ البَاسَ، وَاشْفِ، أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Allahumma Rabban-naas, adhhibil-ba's, washfi antash-shaafi laa shifaa'a illaa shifaa'uka shifaa'an laa yughaadiru Saqama

O Allah! Lord of mankind! Remove this disease and cure the afflicted! You are the Great Curer.  There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease

We pray that Allah (S) protects everyone not afflicted with this sickness and pray that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) provides a cure for it quickly and returns those afflicted with it to full health.  We will continue to update you via email and/or social media on any changes at Masjid As-Siddiq.
